Man: God, can I ask you a question?
Man: Promise you won't get mad.
God: I promise.
Man: Why did you let so much stuff happen to me today?
God: What do you mean?
Man: Well, I woke up late.
Man: My car took forever to start.
Man: At lunch they made my sandwich wrong & I had to wait.
Man: On the way home, my phone went DEAD, just as I picked up a call.
God: All right
Man: And on top of it all, when I got home I just wanted to soak my feet in my new foot massager & relax BUT it wouldn't work!!! Nothing went right today.
God: Let me see, the death angel was at your bed this morning & I had to send one of My Angels to battle him for your life. I let you sleep through that.
Man (humbled): OH
GOD: I didn't let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your route that would have hit you if you were on the road.
Man: (ashamed): OH
God: The first person who made your sandwich today was sick & I didn't want you to catch what they have; I knew you couldn't afford to miss work.
Man (embarrassed): Okay
God: Your phone went dead because the person that was calling was going to give false witness about what you said on that call, I didn't even let you talk to them so you would be covered.
Man (softly): I see, God
God: Oh and that foot massager, it had a shortage that was going to throw out all of the power in your house tonight. I didn't think you wanted to be in the dark.
*Taken from an email sent to me by a friend recently...
Did you ever wonder what you would say to God if you could actually have a conversation with Him? Many of us believe you can on a regular, daily basis, but that is beside the point. Would you complain about how your day went? Would you try to understand why He didn't let things go the way you wanted them to? Would you question whether or not He was paying any attention to you at all, or to your life, or your challenges, to your family and their trials? Would you ask Him why your children are giving you a run for your money and why He hasn't stepped in and taken over?
So often, as parents, we go through life mumbling about how God can let particular things happen in our families, or to our children. We question why things are turning out a certain way or why our loved ones have to go through difficulties even when we trust that God is walking beside us and is in control of life's circumstances.
Why is it that we don't automatically assume that things happen for a reason and that God is still there, going to bat for us, making sure that worse things aren't happening to us as we go through our days, keeping our children safe despite their feelings (especially in the teenage years) of immortality! We are so often prone to whining...we so often turn to God only when things are going desperately wrong. We don't thank Him for the day-to-day assurances and blessings that are showered down when our life is rosy and the road is smooth.
Let's take on a fresh perspective and work on an attitude of gratitude! It is truly amazing to look back on some of our situations and realize that we were indeed spared certain hardships, or that people (angels?) crossed our paths at just the right time, or that the exact amount of money showed up in an unmarked envelope right when we needed it most! Let's thank God for our many blessings and look on the bright side...a positive outlook is a powerful weapon against the doldrums that can take over and the whining which can consume us if we let it!
Do you ever wonder what would happen to us if we chose joy and chose to trust God?!
