Welcome to the Big Adventure!

I hope you know it’s going to be a rip-roaring ride, full of joyful tears, moments of wonder, sighs of contentment! Have you ever thought about what your expectations are of motherhood? Try this: if you could write your own personal scenario, what would it look like? How realistic or unrealistic are your expectations? Chances are, they are as idealistic as mine were. What were your own experiences of being mothered? Are your expectations based on your experiences, what you think the Bible says about being a mom, or perhaps something that you saw on television (in pop culture)? Why did you want to become a mom? Can you accept the fact that God is the only perfect parent?

Are you wanting to be a mom for what it can bring to your life or the glory it can bring to God? Check out the video on TED.com regarding Conception to Birth by Alexander Tsiaras. You will be in awe of God and your experience even more than you probably are already after watching it. Can you trust your instincts and know that God placed in you the ability to parent well, if you listen to your heart?

Can you be okay with doing your best, mothering well, but not being perfect? It’s okay. You will be fine. We learn that we can’t be perfect. Life will always have its challenges. However, mixed in, and hopefully more prevalent, are the pure joys of motherhood. Expect them and savor them, even along with the challenges! That is how we grow and learn to depend on God. What do you anticipate will be your greatest joys in motherhood? On the other hand, what do you think might be your biggest challenges? Write them down and compare notes a year or two down the road!

Dear Lord,
You are an awesome Creator-God! Thank You for this miracle inside of me! I know there will be many twists and turns, ups and downs to expect on my journey as a mom. Please give me the patience, endurance, and grace to do my best. Help me to trust my heart and listen to You as I mother. Especially Lord, give me the humility and wisdom to lean on You and look to You for guidance and strength. I surrender my motherhood and my children to You for Your glory. Help me to never take the gift of being a mother for granted! I don’t have to know what the future will hold for I know You hold me in Your strong arms and my children in the palm of Your hand. Amen!
