Our boys definitely thought we had lost our marbles! One Tuesday night in the spring of 1996, we decided to really play with their brains! Instead of making a typical meal of chicken, mashed potatoes and peas, or pork chops, rice and asparagus, we laid out a spread of sundae makings that would knock their socks off.
Ice cream (four different flavors, all their favorites), hot fudge topping, caramel topping, butterscotch topping, chocolate sauce, walnuts, chocolate chips, sprinkles, toffee bits, whipped cream and maraschino cherries were on the menu that evening. I guess we went a little overboard, because when we called the boys down for dinner and they came scampering into the kitchen, they just about fainted.
All three looked at the table with incredulous faces, then back at us as if we had grown a third eye and horns, then back at the table again. Mark let out a whoop and dove right in. Ben bellied up to the table and gingerly inspected the layout while Scott just shook his head and refused to touch a thing. Their responses were so typical of each of the boys...
We really tossed a curve ball when we served the sundaes on that Tuesday, but it is something they'll probably never forget. We figure it's in the fine print; always keep your children on their toes by mixing things up a bit. When you keep them guessing, life is never boring! Besides, my motto has always been: Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first!
