They're Called Chores for a Reason

Discipline your son and he will give you peace; he will bring delight to your soul.  Proverbs 29:17 Okay, I have a confession to make.  There is nothing that torques me out more than when my kid tells me he's bored!  There are a million things to creatively think of doing, if you put your mind to it, but we got to a stage where our boys were constantly telling us that there was nothing to do!  Never mind that we had cards, dominoes, roller blades, skateboards, sleds, bicycles, games, dart boards, a ping-pong table, movies on VHS, paints, Play-doh, Legos coming out the whazoo, Construx, marbles and books (to name a few possible ways of entertaining oneself).  Still, they would come to us and complain, "I'm bored!  There's nothing to do!"

Now, as a mom (who didn't have enough hours in the day to do all the things on her to-do-list, who always felt like she was playing catch-up from the day before, who went to bed with her head spin-ning - thinking of all the things she needed to do the next day), there was nothing quite so prickly as the statement "I'm bored!"

Whenever I heart it, the scene from the movie "The Exorcist" (where the possessed girl's head spins 360 degrees) would come to mind.  I would clench my teeth and try to stay calm, all the while checking off MY list the possible chores I could just hand over to my cherub while I ate bon-bons and watched soap operas.  "Bored chores" I would call them...
